About the project
We are looking for an experienced Database Architect / Mainframe DB SME to join a large-scale modernization programme for a client operating in the financial services sector.
The programme focuses on modernizing complex legacy and mainframe environments, with a strong emphasis on data migration, modern database technologies and the transition from legacy data structures to PostgreSQL.
This is a senior-level role for someone who can combine deep mainframe database expertise with modern data architecture and migration experience.
You will be responsible for supporting the design and execution of complex data modernization initiatives, including the migration of legacy databases and data structures into modern PostgreSQL environments.
You will work across the full data migration lifecycle — from target architecture and data modelling through migration design, data quality and lineage to database optimization and implementation.
Your responsibilities
- Design target data architectures for legacy-to-modern database migrations
- Develop data models and support the definition of target database structures
- Design and contribute to complex data migration strategies
- Analyse legacy database structures and determine appropriate migration approaches
- Support DB2 to PostgreSQL migration and conversion
- Support VSAM to PostgreSQL migration and conversion
- Analyse and support the conversion of IMS hierarchical data structures
- Define and implement data quality strategies for migration projects
- Establish and maintain data lineage across legacy and target environments
- Design and optimize database indexes in the target PostgreSQL environment
- Identify data dependencies, migration risks and potential technical challenges
- Collaborate with architects, developers, data specialists and other technical stakeholders
Our requirements
- Several years of experience working with databases in complex enterprise environments
- Strong background in mainframe database technologies and legacy data structures
- Hands-on experience with DB2
- Strong PostgreSQL knowledge
- Proven experience with database and data migration projects
- Experience with DB2 to PostgreSQL migrations/conversions
- Experience with VSAM and its migration to modern database technologies
- Knowledge of IMS and hierarchical database structures
- Strong understanding of data modelling and target data architecture
- Experience with data quality and data validation in migration projects
- Understanding of data lineage and data dependencies
- Experience with database indexing and performance considerations
- Ability to analyse complex legacy environments and translate them into modern target architectures
- Strong communication skills and ability to work with both technical and architectural stakeholders
- Good command of English
